Disney Spotlight Stay: The Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

If you’ve ever been to Disney World, you know that the Grand Floridian Resort is the lap of gorgeous luxury. That might explain why it took my family and I 17 years to finally spend a vacation here. My last full-blown vacation to Disney was staying at the Grand Floridian and it could very well be my favorite vacation to date. It’s also special to this platform in itself because it is where I first really started to work on my website!

I thought that a series like this would be really fun to do in the Disney section of my blog. I’ve stayed at almost every single resort and when you’re vacationing at Walt Disney World, the resort is half the fun! So I would love to share my favorite moments, places and insights personal to me on all the places to stay on Disney property. So let’s get into the magical world of the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa…

The Room

Because we are DVC members, we stayed in the newly built DVC villas between the main building and the Wedding Pavilion. Our room overlooked the monorail track! And our balcony didn’t let us miss out on the best part of the nights either – the fireworks.

Disney decor is always off the charts, even in its minimalist form. That is the best part – all of the storytelling elements of Disney are weaved so effortlessly and simply into the elegant pieces around the room.

Of course, the Mickey Mouse towel greeting us to our stay is a must. And so is the TV in the bathroom mirror apparently (AKA the coolest thing ever!).

The Pool

Staying at a hotel with at the upper end of the price spectrum comes with some extra fun things to do, so don’t worry that your money isn’t being compensated with extra features. The Grand Floridian as two pools; the main pool by the lobby where my brother spent half of his days playing my dad in ping pong tournaments and then there’s the pool located near the DVC Villas. Both pools are available to all guests but I’ll tell ya, I love the DVC pool.  First, it has the best water play area for kids and despite my being 20 years old, I obviously checked out the fun of the Alice In Wonderland inspired water features.

The other brilliant feature that my family and I were so not used to – a personal waiter while lounging poolside. Yes, my frugal family definitely took advantage of the special perks of having Barry, our server, take our lunch orders poolside and bring us waters on those scorching summer days.

Not to mention the pool and the entire resort is all lakeside so if you are less of a pool lounger and more of a water activities/sit in the sand type of person, they have that covered too. While you can’t actually swim in the water, you can sit on the sandy beach or participate in other fun activities on the lake like mouse boats, fishing and more.

The Eating

The Grand Floridian has several different dining options including the very luxurious and very expensive Victoria & Albert’s, Narcoosee’s for seafood, 1900 Park Fare for character dining and like 10 more restaurants.

You could catch me all throughout this vacation at Gasparilla Island Grill. This is the Quick Service restaurant located right by the marina and it is one of the better Quick Service restaurants throughout all of Disney World. My family and I have a hard time finding places to eat that are quick service and also good food in Disney World (sorry Disney, you guys have to work on that) and this has the one of the best menu selections for my family. It also has a very big bakery and I ate many a chocolate chip cookie during my 7 day stay.

The Amenities

A resort as upscale as The Grand Floridian, like I said, comes with its extra perks. One of these perks that I was so excited about was yoga! I just got into yoga last year and The Grand Floridian does Rise & Shine Yoga twice a week in the morning. It was super enjoyable and a fun experience that I got to share with my mom. When your resort offers you so many extra things to do, you should take them!

The gym at The Grand Floridian was sort of small in size, but they made up for it by providing fruit, water, towels and headphones to anyone! I really enjoyed those extra things, even if they’re small!

How could one not mention the spa when it’s literally called resort and spa! I actually have not been to the spa, but I was so close to purchasing one of those 50 minute massages during my stay (my dad’s money-conscious ways got the best of me). But it is an important and unique feature to the resort, since there’s only one other branch of the spa located at Saratoga Springs Resort.

And one of the best perks of The Grand Floridian – the shopping! In addition to the store full of Disney merchandise, as present in most of the resorts, The Grand Floridian has additional stores that tend to be upscale, but also more unique. I always go into Summer Lace, which is the women’s clothing store on the first floor of the main building. There’s also a men’s store, a Basin White store with soaps and bath salts and a housewares store with Mickey-themed decor.

The Extras

And then there’s always some advantages that don’t fit into a category. The first being one of my favorite things that makes The Grand Floridian as special as it is – the jazz band. The jazz band plays on the second floor overlooking the lobby of the resort. Little old men play classic jazz songs, giving a classy ambience to the lobby and of course they jazz up some Disney favorites for the guests. This aspect is so unique to The Grand Floridian and it can’t be overlooked in how it makes the resort so special.

The other wonderful aspect of staying at The Grand Floridian is being one monorail or boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom. Who can say no to being so close to the magic?

I hope reading about some of my favorite experiences and things to do from my vacation this past summer inspires you to look a little closer at all of the special and unique aspects of The Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. I’ll end this post with some extra pictures from my stay, so I hope your eyes enjoy!
